The song I chose to analyse is “Faith” by Kendrick Lamar. It is a rap song that was released in 2009 by rapper Kendrick Lamar who is signed to record labels Top Daw, Aftermath and Interscope Records. Kendrick Lamar is a 28 year old African American rapper who was born and raised in Compton, California in a household with four siblings and a single mother. I like the song “Faith” because it is very enjoyable to listen to, has deep, realistic lyrics, and is by my favourite song artist. Out of all the songs I listen to, I chose this song because it has lyrics that are about an important topic that I can relate to. The music affects the overall tone and mood of the song by portraying the song as something that is depressing and for someone to reflect upon because the music was very slow, quiet and sad. The music was subdued. The music was not angry or upbeat like it usually is in Kendrick’s songs. This is because the subdued music made the listeners pay more attention to the lyrics so that they can understand them and reflect upon them, rather than just focusing on the pleasant sounds of the instrumentals. The subdued music allowed Kendrick to be able to not really rap, but instead talk about a story without loud instrumentals taking away the listeners attention from his voice. The instruments that were used in the music were piano and drums. These instruments were used because the piano provided a wide range of sounds from low to high during different parts of the song and the drums provided a steady bass sound for Kendrick Lamar to rap to. The genre of music is reflective of the time period in which it was written because it was written in 2009 and that was around the time of when rap songs began to regain popularity to the large fan base over several demographic groups that has now reached in 2015.
