Flannery O’Connor was an American author that was most famous for her various short stories and novels. O’ Connor was born in Savannah, Georgia to very catholic oriented parents. Being raised around the principles of the catholic church influenced her writing and the themes she would speak about. One of the most prevalent themes in her short stories is the theme of grace. Grace is often seen as an unmerited divine aid given to humans for their regeneration or sanctification. This paper will be analyzing the theme of grace in one of Flannery O’Connor’s short story, “The Life You Save May Be Your Own”. It will analyze the character of Mr. Shiftlet and how he ends up rejecting grace.

The short story begins with Mr.Shifltet arriving at Mrs.Lucynell Craters farm where she lives with her daughter, also named, Lucynell Crater. Right at the beginning Mrs. Lucynell Crater gives a rough description of Mr. Shiftlet which gives us insight into Mr. Shiftlet’s character and how he is a troubled man, which further supports the rest of the plot and also explains Mr.Shiftlet’s decisions later on. He is also described to be wearing a brown hat, which is connected with spiritual death, again foreshadowing that denial of grace. While they were talking Mr. Shiftlet spots a car on the property and agrees to stay on the farm in return for food and a place to sleep. Mrs. Lucynell sees this as an opportunity to

Shiftlet was lonely. His main motive may have been to get a car and move along, but he really needed a companion. Shiftlet even picked up a random boy, who wasn’t even hitchhiking, because he was so lonely, and tried to start a conversation with him that ended up reminding him of Lucynell, how the boy at the Hot Spot called her an angel of God. “The Life You Save May Be Your Own” In the short story, “The Life you Save May Be Your Own”, the author is more of a pessimist than an optimist. Although Mrs. Lucynell Crater’s personality and characterization has a positive view on life, Tom Shiftlet has more pessimistic views on life. Shiftlet is an example that not everybody is as good as they appear to be. One reason why the author is a pessimist is because Tom mentions that he has no friends a few times throughout the short story.…

The main characters in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “Revelation”, and “Parker’s Back” all portray O’Connor’s belief as a Roman Catholic. All of the characters between the three stories are conceptually related and play similar roles in their particular stories. Hey Snodgrass How are you?…

November 11, 1993 –a date typically dissociated with the remembrance of America’s involvement in Vietnam. On this day, the female Vietnam Veteran memorial was dedicated in honor of unspoken heroes, ones whose experiences are unparalleled to the soldiers who partook in the physical fight and incomprehensible to the public’s mind. These brave women, some married, engaged, or mothers, held the burden of a war with undefined intentions both physically and mentally, during combat and upon returning home. Although they played a role in a new kind of warfare, felt the personal sting of the anti-war movement, and suffered from PTSD much like their male counterparts, there was little research done on the nurses and nearly no recognition granted for nearly twenty years.…
