Marriage is often a life goal for many people all over the world, but the ideals and reasoning for marriage have greatly changed throughout the years. One of the possible reasons for this drastic change of expectations about the institution of marriage is the influence of media and big businesses such as Disney and the fairy tales they create. “Human history was ushered in by an act of disobedience”, this is according to the tale of Adam and Eve, but this is most definitely a statement of truth (Fromm 124). Human nature is to disobey just as the animal part of people wants to reproduce. So Disney has found a way to achieve both of these goals through their fairy tales and stories. The idea of marrying for love is a perfect way to conquer these two dilemmas that seem to be as old as time itself. The concept of marrying solely for love being complete nonsense is not only an idea that has been preached throughout households all over the world for a very long time, but has also been preached by guess who, the parents and sometimes villains in Disney films. These characters tell the heroes and damsels that marrying for love is foolish and in some cases illegal due to social class. This can be seen in tales such as Cinderella, and is a perfect example as to why the young people of the world today feel that it is their duty to follow in their favorite fairy tale character’s fictional footsteps and marrying whomever they choose based on love alone. The tale of Cinderella is definitely an appealing one, losing everything then stumbling upon a handsome man that she just so happens to fall in love with must sound like a good idea to just about anyone, especially due to the fact that the handsome man turns out to be the prince. Its seems too good to be true, but that may have something to do with the fact that it is. The story of a young girl whose life goes from riches to rags to even greater riches, but at the end of her story she ends up with a handsome prince on her arm is one that everyone desires. Alle girls grow up wanting to be saved by prince charming and whether they admit it or not all boy want to be able to uphold those expectations. Disney has affect several generations of kids growing up trying to be like the stories and fairy tales they see on the big screen. But this Disneyfied story was not nearly so pleasant in its original form. The way in which big businesses and companies like Disney started creating fairy tales and stories such as this has had a great impact on people’s everyday lives. Relationships such as marriage are one of the institutions most heavily impacted by these rather ridiculous tales being told. Instead of tales told to “warn people about life’s rough roads” (Epstein), these companies are adding their pixie dust to some exceptionally grim stories and making them seem as
