Fair Use Law

Copyright law is defined as a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States to authors of “original works of authorship”. Copyright law is covered in Article 1 Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution. Article 1 of the Constitution as a whole involves freedom of speech. Fair use law is defined as a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative work. Fair use law is covered in Section 107 of the U.S. Constitution. A copyright is basically a patent for media, such as videos, songs, or poems. The entirety of items is far too long to be summed up in a few sentences, but the basic categories are items such as books, songs, plays, dances, paintings, and movies. The first exception is Educational, this means that any work that is used for educational purposes is protected under fair use law. The second exception is the nature of the project, meaning if the information is factual and has an actual purpose of the project, more leniency will be granted than if the copyrighted work is only for entertainment. The third exception granted by fair use law is the amount of work used, “less is more” in this case, the less work that you use, the less likely you are to get in trouble for copyright infringement, provided, of course, that no major aspects of the work are used.
