Fair Trade Coffee Summary

In his article, The problem with fair trade coffee, Colleen Haight argues that since the fair trade coffee price is paid 20 cents per pound higher than normal coffees, fair trade coffee comes from various quality levels of coffees, then the quality problems cannot be tackled due to the “protection” for farmers. In addition, some farmers will plant coffee beans in an unsuitable place for the high profits in Latin America and Africa, which will cause the negative consequences such as unsuccessful production with low quality coffees. However, some private farmers cannot be certified as fair trade coffee even if they have higher quality and protected sustainable environment. He mentions the case that Kraft and Nestle pay more money on producers
