Access and Equity at Brisbane State High School Netball An individual’s decision to participate in a particular sport can often be influenced by contributing social factors that can directly and indirectly shape their opinions with respect to that specific sport (Houlihan et al 2008). Such factors can be illustrated and understood utilising Figueroa’s framework, outlining exactly how they can influence and impact one’s decisions (Amezdroz et al 2010). There are many reasons as to why doping should have harsh punishments but to understand them, one must understand what doping actually is. Doping is when athletes take illegal substances to improve their performances and enhance their abilities. It is most commonly used in sporting events and competitions and is used to gain a physical and mental advantage. Tyson Gay, Asafa Powell, Ben Johnson, and Marion Jones are examples of these elite athletes that have had championships and medals rescinded due to their use of PEDs, such as steroids and EPO (OPV, 2014). One pressure behind the athletes’ use of these drugs within track and field was the thought it was necessary to dope in order to compete at a higher level, similar to many other sports. In an interview, one athlete felt there was pressure to perform, along with pressure to always be improving oneself with people expecting the athlete to be the best. He also stated “I had to prove them right and then to prove myself right” (Pappa & Kennedy, 2012). The pressure to prove others right was outweighing the damage that the drugs could do to the human body in the long…
Sports have been tarnished by steroid use. In sports, it is something special to watch a MLB player hit the ball 475 feet, or even watch NFL players run for an 80 yard touchdown. With steroids these feats would happen way more often. Take “The Steroid Era” to suggestion, baseball had a scarce amount of natural talent. Those who stayed clean, had a rougher time in the league competing with players who used PEDs.…

Who do your kids look up to? Do they look up to a superstar, or a drug addict? In todays world we need to make sure we are careful of who our kids idolize as many athletes make poor moral decisions as they gain fame. Our kids should look up to role models based on their life choices, not based on the number of Sport Illustrated covers they are on. Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, and Alex Rodriguez are all current day examples of how athletes can reflect a negative image to kids.…
For hundreds of years in the history of sports, athletes have become stronger, faster, and more skilled in their specific sport. They have done this by pushing themselves to their limits each day to be the greatest of all time. Then came performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs), the killer of sports. PEDs created an unfair playing field and caused many users to receive negative effects not only in the short-term but also in the long-term. Not to mention these drugs can be lethal.…
Bliss Bergmark Ms. Laura Randazzo Freshmen Honors English 27 January 2015 Hate the Player, Not the Game Broken world records, last second shots, and Hail Mary’s consume the media and stay fresh in the minds of fans everywhere. Lurking in the world of sports, however, is a darker side to these accomplishments. Today, it is all too common to watch oncecelebrated athletes fall from grace by committing crimes. Yet, after these athletes complete their punishments, they are welcomed back into their sport with arms wide open. Despite that, even though it is unethical and basically cheating, athletes still choose to take drugs to boost their performance. Some athletes simply fail to realize that winning and losing is a part of life. At some point, everyone must experience each situation. Because athletes know what they are doing is wrong, using drugs in sports will always be imbalanced. Performance-enhancing drugs are continuing to change the lives of countless athletes.…
Because advertisers promote male sports, people are willing to pay for NBA tickets which are sold for $10-120 unlike the “WNBA” tickets sold for $10-35 a seat in women’s basketball unlike (Female Athletes Salaries 1). Men receive so much money from sponsors unlike women. Is this because of their talent, or the sponsor’s ability to promote the team or athlete? It is known that men’s sports in general bring in higher ratings than women’s sports, because they are not televised as much. On the other hand, sports enthusiasts are just as responsible for the higher television ratings for men over women.…
The notorious seven time tour de France winner Lance Armstrong who doped throughout his seven wins in cycling’s most notable and prestigious event admitted that if he could start his cycling career over again he would still dope (reference 1). Possibly the biggest case of doping in not only the sport of cycling but world sport he had repeatedly said during his career that he did not take performance enhancing drugs but one of his most famous quotes that makes him look foolish now is “I have never had a single positive doping test, and I do not take performance- enhancing drugs” (reference 2) this was in part due to his team covering up positive doping tests and paying off or threatening testers , Armstrong had many quotes like this throughout…
Since the beginning of sports competition, athletes have always wanted to get a better edge over their competitors and will do anything necessary to do so. They go as far as to injecting themselves with drugs and taking supplements to make them bigger, faster, and stronger. A method otherwise known as doping; a process in which athletes use prohibited drugs or training methods to surpass their competitors. These athletes; steaming from all sports, have been misusing these drugs, not wanting to spend the crucial time and effort others are willing to do. They desire a quick and easy route to these achievements through the use of the said drugs.…
(Orchard et al., 2006) Almost every prescription drug comes with a list of potential side effects to a person’s health and some can even lead to an athlete’s death, if taken or used incorrectly or in combination with other substances. (Hemphill, 2009) Cardiovascular disease, Cancer and infertility are some of the co morbidities resulting from the more commonly used physical performance enhancing drugs of the group of anabolic steroids. (Hemphill, 2009) The effect of Anti-doping laws therefore minimises and discourages the use of those drugs and their negative effects and helps to protect the individual athlete from unnecessary harm.…
In the professional sporting industry top athletes are often awarded high value prizes for winning specific events. Drug testing identifies whether an athlete is doping and if tests are positive the athlete can be prevented from competing in events. This allows the sport industry to remain unbiased and intact. 2.2…
