Failure to Answer a Specific Question

Whenever a question is asked, in most cases, it’s not unreasonable to expect an answer to the question. If a question is asked and you didn’t receive a specific answer to the question, there is a reason for this. In 1988 while on the campaign trail, Al Gore was asked if he ever smoked marijuana. He responded with the following answer:

“I don’t think this is an appropriate question. If you’re asking me have I done that as an adult in my career; the answer is no. Have I done anything within the last 15 years; the answer is no. Did I experiment in college as a college student; my answer is that’s an inappropriate question.” (4)

Can one undoubtedly give an answer to one of the most obvious examples of rhetorical questioning?. Throughout the six thousand words that make up this complex, sprawling mystery not once was there a statement that truly answered to the question Who is John Galt?. Perhaps what seeks to be done cannot be done with words alone to produce a unified definition which only a narrative can can provide, through the series of events and their impact on me as the reader For the protagonist, Dagny Taggart, she is at the core of a very distasteful slang, nothing but an empty question synonymous with despair and the ineffectuality of questioning that which cannot…

In the film “12 O’clock High,” leadership and followership play a significant role in the plot, and it has been used for decades by the military as a training exercise. The same principles were used in the Human Factors class to help the students determine their leadership styles and how to be a better follower. From the very first few scenes, “12 O’clock High” was a true story about how a bombing unit in World War 2 bounced back from a period of bad luck and poor training to become one of the best units the U.S. Army Air Force had. As the plot begins, Colonel Davenport is shown the Officer in Command of the bomber unit. While he participates in every bombing run, and has a close relationship with most of his men, his men are performing poorly…

William Davies, author of "The Age of Post-Truth Politics", writes in the public discourse on account of the current sociopolitical ambiance for the general populace. The intention of this piece is to discuss the trend once again breaking out of spinning the truth to create advantages on behalf of the proponent or disadvantage for the opponent. It is a professional piece critiquing, specifically, political parties for their twisting of the truth instead of relying on data to convince the populace of their ability. Davies uses an impassioned, urgent tone to evoke a feeling - a need to undertake immediate action - by asking rhetorical questions such as " How can we speak of 'facts' when they no longer provide us with a reality that we all agree on?" and "…how are we to achieve any consensus on the nature of social, economic and environmental problems, never mind agree on the solutions?", as well as providing questions in the form of statements.…

Socrates was one of the most noted opponents of the Sophists. As a teacher of dialectics, he was interested in the quest for the truth rather than the art of persuasion (Joseph 110). According to some of the Socratic dialogues recorded by Plato, Socrates thought Sophists were a threat, not because they promoted atheism or immortality, but because they set themselves up as experts on the question “How is one to live?” without having the necessary knowledge. Socrates was concerned that if people’s lives were ruled by rhetoric instead of being guided by philosophy, the pursuit of happiness would overtake the pursuit of the…
