Failure In College

Improved Essays
Success is very important to me and I don’t let anything hold me back. This is where my vice comes into play. Occasionally I am manipulative in order to optimize my success. For example, when working on a group project for a communication class, I had to be manipulative in order to succeed. Failure in college is something I will not accept. So, at the time, it was extremely important that I do well on this project. It was never my intention to be arrogant or pressure someone to do something they clearly did not want to do during this group project. So, I used methods that were less conspicuous in an attempt to get them to complete their given task. I stated using manipulative reasoning to make my group members participate in the project.

Incoming students wonder if they will fit in and do well enough to stay in a university. In his New York Times article, “Conquering the Freshman Fear of Failure,” David L. Kirp explains that he believes several freshman doubt themselves, their social skills, and their ability to do well in college. In this article, David L. Kirp effectively argues that this cycle of doubt can make students more likely to drop out of school and that universities need to step in and encourage students through his use of ethos, logos, and pathos.…

Prompt 2 I couldn’t have been prouder on the day I scored horribly on the SAT. Not the official one, but a practice one that was taken in a controlled environment. I knew I could have easily scored higher than the meager score I received that day, but that’s not important. It wasn’t the SAT score I was proud of that day, but rather the significant life transformation that also happened that day in Beijing, China.…

Failure manifests as numerous different things and presents itself in a variety of forms, none of which embody excitement, or joy, or even a tad pleasure. Failure is tough; it habitually feels dreadful and heart wrenching, and occasionally makes you want to crawl up into the tightest, smallest, most compact little ball you manage to muster, where you sit in a corner and hope and pray for it somehow to go away, for somehow the pain to stop. Other times failure results in embarrassment, take a comedian who strives tremendously hard night and day, week in and week out, prepping and preparing jokes for what inevitably turns into his big break, his time to shine, but when the time arrives for him to march up those velvet covered stairs and step…

To be truly honest with you, I never really thought I would even graduate from high school. I essentially failed everything in 9th grade, due to family problems, I never showed up to my classes, I barely did anything that a student was supposed to do. Instead, I was working full time at the age of 14 turning 15 at Tim Hortons. Why? Because that was my way of surviving when I was left alone by my family.…

While I did withdraw from four courses in college, all of these withdrawals were considered “withdrawn without prejudice”; had I withdrawn because of a low grade, this would be noted on my transcript as a WF for withdraw / fail. Any class I withdrew from was not essential to my major or to my graduation requirements. I feel that these withdrawals are in no way indicative of my academic potential or work ethic. To demonstrate this point, I will detail my reasons for withdrawing from each course. In regards to Beginning French II in Spring 2012, I originally placed into Intermediate French through a placement exam, but I wasn’t fully confident in my two years of French from high school; the course I enrolled in, Beginning French II, turned out to be a review of what I’d already learned, so taking it would not have challenged me.…
