Failure Happens
In the sixth grade my father dragged to a wrestling practice at Milwaukie High School for the youths league. I was ecstatic about the whole thing even though I didn’t know a single person at the practice. I met the coaches who were great at understanding that I didn’t know much about wrestling perse but knew a lot about grappling because I had done jujitsu before I had gone to any wrestling practices. Something no one knows is that after the first practice to see if you really wanted to wrestle the coaches came up to me and said “Your name is Ricky right? Man you really have a natural talent for this sport and I really hope you wrestle for us this year.” I will never forget what he said to me because that is what really influenced

I was right up there to be able to go to State and I knew I could win my weight class if I got the chance to go but I never did. I got sick and I wasn’t able to compete for at least a few weeks, I was struggling to keep my weight where it was I felt like I was dying, the doctors told me don’t wrestle or it will make you worse, so that’s exactly what I did. When I got better the first thing I did was go to wrestling practice, the next wrestling meet which was the last meet to be able to qualify for state I lost my first two matches it came down to the last match. I walk on the mat already exhausted because I wrestled back to back matches, sweat pouring down my face, hands at my hips, breathing heavy, the other kid’s coach saw that and said to him “He’s tired it’ll be an easy match for you” me and the kid shook hands and the referee said wrestle and it was on. I took the kid down with a double leg takedown, I picked him up and he was in the air then slammed down on the mat, I heard and felt all the air come out of him, and within a few seconds I heard the referee slam his hand onto the mat. At that point I knew I had won, I jumped up screaming with my fist clenched in the air then dropped down to my knees with my hands on my head I was so lighthearted in that moment it didn’t matter what happened next. That following Monday at practice they were talking about State they pulled everyone into the staff room, I was told I wouldn’t make the cut to go to State because I was just one win

That failure was the leading motivator for me when I had to come to grips that I would have to get a lot better if I want to make this team. What I can take away from this experience is that if failure knocks me down, to get back up and never give up on whatever it is that I set my…

I was 10 years old. I looked from the edge of the mat, unaware about the endeavor I was about to take the moment my foot touched that mat. I finally decided to walk on, like they had taught me by bowing, it was the first of a near million times I was going to do this. I was a white belt, at the best taekwondo centers in the area. All the kids, stood to the side eerily silent, waiting for instructions.…

Some of my successes in life include winning baseball tournaments, getting voted into the allstars in my baseball league, being the youngest kid in colorado to get his license to hunt, and firing a 306 when i was 6 without my arm falling off. My 1st success in baseball was when i was 7 years old and my team was losing the championship game by 2 points, so when i got up to bat there was a guy on 3d base and on 2nd, we already had 2 outs so if i got out we lost the game here. So when i got up to bat i got 2 strikes and the next pitch i hit allowing me to get to 2nd base and my teammates on bases 2 and 3 to get home and score the 2 points we needed to tie the game and go into overtime.…

A few years ago we were competing at a national competition, where several hundred spectators watched as our team took the floor to perform a routine that we had practiced, perfected, and performed many times that year. I was “basing” a “flyer” in a stunt that was positioned in the very center of the routine, because we were known as the “stunt group that always hit.” The stunt hit perfectly in the air as it had so many times before, but as my flyer cradled down I took a step backwards and was not able to fully catch her leg. I heard the echo of our parents’ cheering turn into what felt like dead silence, as I watched her knee hit the mat. I instantly knew I had just made a huge mistake that was going to be costly for my team.…

My first class went as much as someone could expect from a first lesson in anything, not as good as I imagined. But, my coach spoke to the class, and to the newer faces, and made us a promise that we will get better through our hard work and practice. He also promised that he would continue to help us improve for as long as we were there. I didn’t believe in myself as much in the sport and thought to myself how I would probably not be able to be good at all. I would go the three-days-a-week I signed up for and feel embarrassed in myself that I couldn’t do certain things that seemed so simple.…

I was absolutely dreading this day because, for varsity matches, only one person in each weight class is allowed to wrestle. Our varsity wrestler for the weight class I was in was injured so I had to wrestle in the varsity match. As I stepped out onto the mat for the first time, I looked over and began analyzing my opponent: a shaved head, tattoo covered arms, and 200 pounds of solid muscle. What did I get myself into?…

I never expected something bad to happen that day. It was my parents anniversary night, May 11th, 2017, and of course, I had a softball game. We knew that the opposing team was better than us, but we still played hard, until the accident, that is when everything fell apart. My parents anniversary night was on one of my last home games of the season, but not the teams. Our game was at the Hyatt Elementary softball/baseball fields.…

Failure is not unusual but having the courage to get back up and fight for what I believe in is indeed unusual. Much earlier in my studies, I have surmounted tremendous hardship which caused me to drop out of college. I have migrated to America in the early 2000s with my family seeking a better life because my country did not have much to offer.…
