Failing School Research Paper

Decent Essays
Failing grades are important; however, getting enough sleep is just as much of a necessity. Ripley stated ¨schools begin before 8 a.m.¨ and then they ¨spend long hours practicing (11). Ripley went on to say that schools start early “despite research showing that later start times improve student performance”(11). All this could be fixed very easily if we just exterminated sports programs. Students need more sleep to perform at their best in school.

According to an article found on the NPR website, “Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens’ Health,” written by Nancy Shute, beginning school too early in the day harms student health and academic capabilities. “...making middle and high schoolers start classes before 8:30 a.m. threatens children's' health, safety and academic performance.” Dr. Cora Breuner, specialist at Seattle Children’s Hospital, stated that children are not getting near the required amount of sleep each night. Due to the early start times, teenagers, on average, are getting somewhere between six to seven hours of sleep per night while they should be getting around eight to ten. The National Sleep Foundation explains “High school athletics are very important to many students who have obvious concerns about the impact of a change in start times on their ability to participate. Any delay in the start of school will most likely result in a later release time, which may reduce the time available for practice and matches (especially daylight hours)..” Though it is most likely true that if schools were to start later, they would be released later, that should not result in problems with after school activities. Practices, clubs, and other activities that take part in students lives after school can be easily rescheduled, and lights can be installed or settings can be changed if it gets too dark outside for kids to play sports or do outdoor activities. According to Dr. Bert Jacobson, professor and head of the School of Educational Studies at Oklahoma State University, "Sleep deprivation impacts us physically, which can negatively affect our coordination, agility, mood, and energy.…

Did you know that only one in every five middle and high schools start after 8:30 A.M, yet the American Academy of Pediatrics has recommended that middle and high schools start after 8:30 A.M. Students that don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily physical activity, suffer from depressive symptoms, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs, and perform poorly in school. American Academy should start later because students are more likely to have bad things happen to them, and students cannot learn well when their brains are still asleep. Most students that don’t get enough sleep engage in things that are unhealthy. The CDC states that students who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to be overweight, not engage in daily physical activity, suffer from depressive symptoms, engage in unhealthy risk behaviors such as drinking, smoking tobacco, and using illicit drugs, and perform poorly in school. Students that got about nine hours of sleep are more likely to improve their health, mindset, and academic results.…
