Summary: The After Effects Of Abortion

As humans, we often think that we are doing good deeds when we are doing harm. We provide reasons to ignore responsibility. And in the process of ignoring responsibility, someone gets murdered. This can be seen in the issue of abortion. In addition to the mother killing her own child, she is very likely to kill herself as well. Sarah Terzo, online journalist for LifeNews.com (2013), says that according to a study conducted in Finland where six hundred thousand were studied, “women who were pregnant and had an abortion were six times more likely to commit suicide than women who carried their babies to term” (para. 4). This is a form of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder where the woman is left to deal with the choices she has made and the guilt of knowing that the child is not there because of her. Women who suffer with this syndrome have symptoms such as anxiety, guilt, feeling numb, and several others (Post Abortion n.d). Some women who are post abortive also chose to avoid pregnant women and children because it is just a reminder of what they have done (Post Abortion n.d). Another symptom of PASS is depression. Personally, it seems as though PASS and Post-Partum Depression, or depression after giving birth to baby, could correlate. If we take a look at the symptoms of PASS and Post-Partum, they are fairly similar. For example, according to Melinda Smith, MA and Jeanne Seagal, PH. D(2015), the symptoms of post-partum include “…lack of energy and motivation, feelings of worthlessness and guilt…, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide”(para. 8). I believe that PASS is a combination of Post-Partum and guilt form having an abortion.
