In the book Fahrenheit 451 Mildred, Montag’s wife attempts suicide by overdosing. Montag asks Mildred why she attempted suicide and she denies it and instead, Mildred waits for him to go and bluntly brushes off the accusation. Earlier in the book on page six Clarisse McClellan asks Montag “ are you happy” to which he responds “ Of course I’m happy. What does she think? I’m not?” Montag is constantly reassuring himself that he is happy because he is scared to be depressed in a society where everyone must remain happy. While Mildred is receiving treatment on page thirteen Montag asks the operators why they didn't send an M. D and the operator response is“We get these cases nine or ten a night”. In Montag’s society, people are constantly attempting suicide because they are not happy and do not talk about their problems because they much rather use technology as a coping method like we see Mildred do throughout the book. The habit of using your phone to communicate affects daily activities like having a meal with your family or an intellectual conversation. Without these conversations, children do not learn to be empathetic to others which can lead to social problems in the future. In Fahrenheit 451 Clarisse has a significant amount of emotional intelligence compared to everyone else. On page nine Montag admits he is unhappy “ He wore his happiness like a mask and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask and there was no way to knock on her door and ask for it back.” Montag is unhappy until he meets Clarisse because he has never opened up to anybody before and Clarisse makes him talk about these profound feelings that anguish him. Clarisse and Montag’s relationship shows the importance of communication and how significant it is to our well-being. Technology often seems like the foundation to everything but it cannot teach the essential skills everyone needs in life. “They can lose the ability to focus on what is most important, a trait critical to the deep thought and problem solving”(Brody) throughout school students are required to focus on assignments and independent studies but technology can cause kids to get distracted and play games
