My freshman english teacher had us read Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. After we finished the book, she had our class sit in a circle and answer question out loud; however, we weren’t allowed to disagree with any answers and instead had to add onto the topic. The questions were open ended and relied on grasps of ethics and morality. For the first time I felt the rush of being intellectually challenged. The questions sparked me to think about my own morals and identify my identity. From these circles I learned to question ideas and to accept different perspectives. I felt that hearing the thoughts of others students propelled my own thinking and gave me a feeling of enhanced curiosity. I realized that by sharing the knowledge that I had accumulated was able to create a diverse voice, my own identity.

These seminars were so exhilarating because they prompted thinking and creativity without strict guidelines or judgement. When I had a good grasp of the topic, I could pose more questions to see the response of my peers. When I was less informed, I could listen and combine the ideas of others to judge my own standpoint.
