Throughout the novel Fahrenheit 451 we see exam some of the stages of the Monomyth pattern. The stages of the Monomyth are the Departure, Initiation, and Return. We will follow Guy Montag, through each stage of the Monomyth. We will see what it will take for this thirty year old fireman to overcome the challenges that has been placed into his life.
The first stage of the Monomyth that we will look at is the departure. In the very beginning of the book, Montag, is at the fire station and gets a call that he needs to go out to a home to burn some books. It is their hope that one day they will be able to pass on the books to future generations. By finding these men, Montag, feels like he finally has somewhere he truly belongs and the sort of happiness, which he had been lacking his whole life? As the city burns, he finally head back towards the city to see the destruction that has happen there. . Part of the Return process is finding true happiness and then going back home, which is exactly what Montag did. “I want to see everything now. And while none of it will be me when it goes in, after a while it’ll all gather together inside and it’ll be me (3).” Guy Montag, finally discovering himself and he knows who he is, and realizing what it takes to be happy in life.
Through Guy Montag, journey, we saw the different events of the Monomyth portrayed. We saw as he faced challenges, that he tend to run from them, but as he had help along the way, he learned that the must over those challenges and face up to them. In our own lives we too can apply this to our lives when we are face with struggles, we have a father figure to help us on the way home. All we have to do is face our trials and ask for help to overcome them. As we do this we will find our path back to our
