Opposites attract, just like magnets attract, people attract. In this case, it was not love, it was friendship. In the book Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse is seen as an outsider due to her ‘insane’ thinking and curiosity towards the world and not like other teenagers that drink and drive. While Guy Montag is the complete opposite, he is seen as a normal firefighter that does his job and does not ask any questions. Even though they are foil characters, Clarisse introduced Montag to the world of which was the true world and not what the government just wanted people to know. He thought he was happy doing his job until he met Clarisse and then she opened his eyes to what society is really like. That morning Montag spoke to Clarisse about how firefighters use to put out fires instead of starting them and then a few nights later, Montag was told to burn a house with a woman in it and then when he came home, he found that Mildred was trying to overdose. What happened in those last few days changed Montag’s perspective for the better and how he saw the world on what the world was truly about. After he saw the woman get burned alive in her home, he started to steal books and read them. When the chief firefighter, Beatty, noticed something different about Montag, Beatty realized that Montag has been stealing and hiding books in his own home. Beatty then took matters into his own hands by making sure Montag would never see a book again. Montag was taken to his house on a normal firefighters day and Beatty stopped and Montag spoke slowly and said, “Why… we’ve stopped in front of my house,” (106). Montag thought that he would never be caught, he thought that he had everything figured out. He thought that society should not burn books and that they should cherish them. Montag then made a broad statement by saying, “We never burned right,” (113). As saying that there was a right way to burn. That burning something does not necessarily have to be a bad thing, that they could burn for light and or warmth that fires provide. After saying that tp Beatty, he took the flamethrower that they use to start the fires and burned Beatty. Montag wanted to make a statement that they should not burn books and houses just because society says they should.
