People commence on a journey in their lifetime. This journey may take their whole life and even then some people will not be able to finish. The hero’s journey is a life-changing experience. Once completed, people can see their life from a new light. They are reborn similar to how a phoenix burns itself and is reborn from its own ashes. In Fahrenheit 451, a science fiction dystopian novel by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag, the protagonist, is a fireman who burns books. He goes through a journey that transforms him and helps him see his society from a different perspective. Montag is unsure of how to answer her question, so he goes home. Once inside “[h]e felt his smile slide away, melt, fold over and down on itself like a tallow skin… He was not happy… He wore his happiness like a mask and the girl had run off across the lawn with the mask and there was no way of going to knock on her door and ask for it back” (12). As soon as Montag crosses the doorstep of his house, he changes psychologically. Montag crosses the first threshold in his journey. He mentally and emotionally changes to realize that he is not happy with his life; he desires more out of it. This quotation also reiterates the fact that Clarisse is an important factor in the initiation of his journey. Now that Montag has the push he required, he can embark on his journey for selfhood.
In the next stage of the journey, Montag encounters numerous trials and challenges that lead to his metamorphosis. When at work, the Mechanical Hound growls at Montag because it detects his changing conscious. This provides evidence of Montag’s shifting mentality.
