Montag is depicted as a fireman in this society. Throughout the book Montag is characterized into a different person. In Montag’s society books are illegal possessions and are destroyed if they are found. Montag participates in the burning of books, yet he doesn’t know the reason for books being outlawed. Montag starts to get curious about the reason for burning books due to an influence by Clarisse McClellan. Clarisse is a seventeen year old girl and she is killed by a speeding car a few days after she is introduced into the text. Although, she is only in the text for a short amount of time she helps Montag by questioning his life and his love. This is when Montag takes a turn because he looks for solutions in his hidden stash of books that he kept rather than burning. The next day, Montag doesn’t show up to work so his chief Beatty is puzzled and decides to visit his house. Montag asks Beatty the reason for them to burn books rather than reading them. Montag 's future looks bright and he learned the importance of books and how they contain knowledge and should not be burned. Montag also learned that the popular vote isn 't always the right one since reading books rather than burning them is important. Montag’s story also send the reader the message that, “Fahrenheit 451 is not so much about books as it is about thinking.” (Lease) [1]and that the book mainly wanted the reader to see that now information is sold when it should be free to get, Lease also says,” This economic environment is causing more and more academic libraries to subscribe to fewer and fewer journals.” (Lease)
