“Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly -- they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced.” (Huxley). Reading retains great influence and it’s lessons seem to be more impactful than those witnessed on Television or movies. I’m not sure exactly why I feel this way; maybe it is because you get to imagine what you are reading and are not bound by the depiction on a screen. I’m not however the first to think this; many prominent figures such as Bill Gates and Warren Buffet strongly believe reading makes you a smarter person and gives you power. The power of reading is not only mentioned in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World it is the main focus of Fahrenheit 451 which depicts a dystopian world where all books are burned to keep citizens complacent and powerless. The lessons and insight about life that reading has presented me this year were very interesting and impactful.
One of the first books I read this year was The Education of Little Tree based on my Dad’s

Even through all of the pain he experienced Beah persisted and survived to tell his story of being a child soldier in Sierra Leone. Beah’s perseverance was something that shines throughout the novel, later in the book he discusses part of his motivation, saying,“When I was young, my father used to say, ‘If you are alive, there is hope for a better day and something good to happen. If there is nothing good left in the destiny of a person, he or she will die.’ I thought about these words during my journey, and they kept me moving even when I didn’t know where I was going. Those words became the vehicle that drove my spirit forward and made it stay alive” (Beah). This somewhat morbid outlook on life is very interesting and further emphasized the main lessons I learned from the book: keep going and things will

In the book Fahrenheit 451 written by Ray Bradbury, the story takes place in 2053 in a unknow city somewhere in the US. The book was written in the past in 1953 it foreshadows the future and tells what is possibly going to happen. The book's mood is sad, depressing and boring, because all the people are always watching tv and also killing themselves because all the do is sit and do nothing in their terrible world. The ones who read on the other hand don’t sit and do nothing/killing themselves because they are doing better things than watching tv. Those are the one’s realizing their world is a terrible place.…

Fahrenheit 451 Including, the book “Fahrenheit 451” written by Ray Bradbury, the beginning of the book tells the reader about the main character Montag. Montag is a firefighter, but he doesn’t fight fires like a firefighter does today, He is part of a fire fighting group that goes house to house seeing if there are books, and if they find the books they burn them. The reason these firefighters burn books is because they have a politic where you can’t read books, because the leaders in this society don’t want people to use their imaginations and to think different or know more then anyone else.…

At this point, I have encountered all of the possible characters that one can encounter in this novel. While I have met all of them, I cannot say I remember them all. All weren't interesting to me; either due to the lack of time the narrator and the character spend with them, or that they were introduced at a time in the novel where I was much more preoccupied by the difficulties encountered by the protagonist and whether or not he would survive. The protagonist's name is Guy Montag.…

In the novel Fahrenheit 451, Ray bradbury uses subjects that are highly applied in today's world to stitch together a story of a futuristic dystopia. Some would agree that the setting in which Farenheit 451 faces is much like our own society today. The book takes place in a world where firemen do not put out fires, they start them and burn books and houses. Books are illegal and frowned upon and creative and intelligent thinking is a sin. Ray Bradbury grew up in a time where televisions were starting to show up and many people think it's scary how accurately Fahrenheit is much like our world this day in age.…

My freshman english teacher had us read Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. After we finished the book, she had our class sit in a circle and answer question out loud; however, we weren’t allowed to disagree with any answers and instead had to add onto the topic. The questions were open ended and relied on grasps of ethics and morality. For the first time I felt the rush of being intellectually challenged. The questions sparked me to think about my own morals and identify my identity.…

Joseph Brodsky said, “There are worse crimes than burning books. One of them is not reading them.” A lot of people have an apathy for reading. When you read you gain so much knowledge without even realizing it. Reading laconic books from when you were in kindergarten like, “Goodnight Moon,” taught you how to appreciate everything around you.…
