Both characters start out in the beginning of their novels as living a bland lifestyle that the government has laid out for them only to eventually realize the corruption in the society around them and try to rebel against their governments. Neither Guy nor Winston are written as “traditional heroes” like so many other characters are in their novels. Both Montag and Smith are written with flaws that most other main characters are never shown with; Montag and Smith are shown as being human. In 1984, Winston isn’t described with the typical physical appearance of most heroes. Winston is a middle-aged man with physical weakness; Winston isn’t in the ideal image of a hero. At one point in the book, another character even commented "That's better, comrade, that's much better," she added encouragingly as Winston, with a violent lunge, succeeded in touching his toes with knees unbent, for the first time in several years.”(cite).
