There are many initiatives that play a core role in helping colleges and universities maintain its academic stability, and social reputation. Some initiatives take on a bigger role than others; however, at any school displaying a high level of customer service to students is imperative. The individuals that college students interact with throughout their college career are faculty members. According to Tagg (2003) article “To the extent that their work is relevant to the education of undergraduates, “the faculty” can be defined at most colleges as the people who teach the classes” (p.23). The learning communities were implemented at the institution in connection with the First Generation Student Success Program. Having successful learning communities requires an extensive level of dedication from faculty, being that they are the forefront of the institution. Volunteer instructors in the case study participated in twelve hours of faculty preparation and faculty workshops. The workshops embodied analyzing successful learning communities, learning new systems that were implemented, and creating a syllabus that is learner centered for students. Cutright and Swing (2005) found that “The learning communities initiative is just one of many faculty and professional development efforts concentrated in the Teaching/Learning Center, a unit that was founded in 1990 and has become core to the college’s program development and improvements” (p.45). Both institutions are cutting edge leaders in establishing an environment that allows for faculty to excel in their careers. Both two year colleges highly support workshops that encourages faculty to stay current on the advancements in technology. CCD and LaGuardia cater to diverse student population, so it is equally important for the schools to stay current on the rapidly changing advancements in technology. Grant funding supports the faculty development workshops, and the learning communities associated with the programs. Learning communities place student learning at the core of an academic institution, making it imperative that faculty understand the concepts associated with being learner centered. With CCD holding 1,000 less students than LaGuardia Community College, they however offer 100 faculty workshops annually, and show their appreciation by contributing $350 stipend to volunteer faculty who attend the workshops.
