The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller about the factual events that took place in Salem Massachusetts in 1692. The Crucible is again about factual events and was written to inform people on the tragic events that happened 300 years ago. The play by Miller shows the true reason why the trials started and why they continued. The Crucible also provides insight into the cold war time period and things that people did in fear of Soviet spies and how similar it was to a “Witch Hunt”. The Crucible is mainly about how mass hysteria can cause small harmless events to get out of hand quickly even to the point of murder. Several girls doom many women to save themselves when these accusations fly “I saw Alice Barrow with the devil.” “I saw Goody Hawkins with the devil” “I saw Goody Bibber with the devil” (Miller, 1394-1404). All of this is before the trials start and this is when everything stops making any sense at all. One of last to be tried is John Proctor who is a well-respected farmer who is only accused by Abigail when he rejects her insane perception of love for him. He is asked to recite the 10 commandments from memory which is not a reasonable request especially in a court case where the defendant is going to be hanged based on this ridiculous question. Inevitable Proctor is not able to finish all the commandments but he does make it through 9 off the top of his head”
Ultimately the Crucible was based on the true story that took place with real people in salem massachusetts in 1692 but is written for the purpose of comparing and criticising the accusing culture of the cold war era. The Salem witch trials mimics the way we treated people who were suspected Soviet spies and how many were innocent.
