INTRODUCTION

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) presents significant challenges to a person's ability to carry out functional tasks and participate in social networks. Such factors are widely recognized as contributing to a person's sense of self identity, health and well-being. HOW DOES COPD IMPACT ON ADL’s?
If COPD is mild and has been diagnosed at an early stage, you may be able to avoid severe progressive lung damage. However most people do not realised they have the condition until it is well advanced. They often need to retire from work early and may become inactive and house bound by shortness of breath. Activities that involve any sort of physical activity which were once a part of everyday life become a chore. Activities of daily living become harder to achieve and it is often the case that clients with advanced COPD are put into some type of care facility. Continuous oxygen treatment is required and sometimes family members are unable to cope with the stress of the condition.

WHO IS INVOLVED IN CLIENT CARE?
Self-management interventions improve various outcomes for many chronic diseases. The success of self-management in the care of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has not been quantified. A continuum of self-management for COPD patients provided by a trained health professional can significantly reduce the utilization of health care services and improve health status. This approach of care can be implemented within normal practice. (Archives of Internal Medicine, Vol 163 No.5 March 10, 2003).
