The president is Horacio Cartes and is helped by Vice President Juan Afars Maciel. They have both been president and vice president since August 15, 2013. The flag has three horizontal bands (The World Fact Book: Paraguay). The colors are red, white, and blue with an emblem. The emblem is a yellow star in the center of a wreath. The words Republica Del Paraguay are circled around it. On the other side of the flag there is a lion holding a staff. Paraguay is the only country that has a flag with two different meanings. The colors for the flag were chosen because the soldiers of Paraguay carried red, white, and blue flags when they went to war in 1806. The symbols on the flag were put on in 1842 but in 2013 they changed it some but wanted to still keep the same characteristics of the flag of 1842. The national symbol for Paraguay is a lion.
