There are now at least 50,700 people sleeping rough in parks and streets across Italy according to the latest figures on homelessness from national statistics agency Istat.
According to a report released on Thursday Italy's ranks of homeless have grown by over 4 thousand over the last four years, rising from 47,648 since 2011.
“The economic crisis of the last few years has clearly had a strong affect,” explained Magda Baetta from Ronda Carità e Solidarietà, a group that works to help the homeless across Milan.
“But there is also much less solidarity in 2015. People are more self-interested and nobody can rely on typical family relationships anymore: perhaps the biggest thing pushing up numbers is that people have less strong relationships and fall into homelessness with great ease.” …show more content…
According to Istat, 85.7 percent of all Italy's homeless are men, 58.2 percent of all homeless people are foreign and 75.8 percent are below 54.
