Back in Yamasaki’s time, the largest plane was a 707, but now in the 21st century we are more developed. Many thought that the crash of a plane to the towers would not damage it enough to have the whole building fall down. An interesting theory was that when the plane crashed it created a fire, normally the steal would not have collapsed if the fire was put out. Due to the fire burning for an extensive period of time it caused the stiffness to be reduced, therefore it softened the steel trusses that supported the floors. “Once the steel stiffness (modulus) reduces sufficiently, the axial stiffness demand for lateral support to the columns will no longer be available.
