Sensitive Parenting

Improved Essays
Children are like a sponge; they absorb influences from the environments they are

exposed to very quickly. Environmental factors, parental influences and many other outside

factors can possibly affect children not only in their early childhood, but also at later ages.

Parents especially are the most influential factor for acquiring language and social skills when

children are very young (Pancsofar & VernonFeagans, 2006) because of the large amount of

time children spend with them. Thus, it is important to examine the possible factors and

acknowledge how they would influence children.

Language development of children has been studied by many researchers. Barnett,

Gustafsson, Deng, MillsKoonce and Cox (2012) have studied the bidirectional

not improve college students’ academic experiences. The result of the present study opposes the

argument of the previous study that sensitive parenting impacts children’s social competence

skills and language skills that will further contribute to their later development (Barnett et al.,

2012). Also, students who were exposed to frequent language input by their parents in their

childhood belonged to the groups with middle to low academic experience scores, indicating that

there is an indistinct correlation between parental language input and students’ overall academic

experiences. The result of the present study also conflicts with the argument of Lee and Kim

It may have resulted from a lack of sufficient number of participants. Using a

wider and larger sample population is strongly suggested for further improvements of the

research to gather more various results to correlate variables.

Another limitation is that parenting style and language input assessment were

selfassessed by participants which could have provided biased data because data is relied on

only their perceptions. Like how many researchers do for their studies, further improvements can

be made by surveying both participants and their parents, or through a longitudinal study that

observes participants’ childhood and measure their academic experiences in college to get more

unbiased and accurate data. In their studies, Barnett et al. (2012), Lee and Kim (2012), McNally

and Quigley (2014), Pancsofar and VernonFeagans (2006), and Pungello et al. (2009) measured

both children’s development, and parental behaviors and familial characteristics

Parenting styles play a critical role in the development of a child. In fact, research shows that parenting styles can impact a child’s social, cognitive, and emotional growth. Children are shaped through the parental acts of motivation, interaction, and exchange throughout their childhoods. The results of these acts will either be negative or positive, and this influence can carry on well into adulthood. While there are several classifiable parenting styles, this research is going to focus on the Authoritative style of parenting, which actually is considered a combination of both Authoritarian and Permissive parenting styles.…

The language barrier was the biggest problem, but also the stress of their jobs, supporting the household, and their low educational attainment were also very influential in the academic involvement my parents could offer. Thus, according to my mother, all they could do was to make sure I understood the importance of getting an education and prevent me from getting into trouble. She went on to say “I think my job was mainly to cover all your basic needs so that you can be the best you can possibly be”. My mother’s words reminded me of a statement in Louie’s book, “parental involvement [was]…largely in terms of ensuring the children were healthy, went to school, and did not behave badly”(76). The Childhood Cancer Survivor Survey constructed by the National Cancer Institute in 1993, they composed a retrospective piece of research into 14,000 ex-patients with 3,700 siblings. The conclusions drawn from the study inferred that the adults who survived childhood cancer, had the same positive psychological well-being as their siblings. Contradicting this, another report stated that adolescent survivors were 1.5 times more likely to have depression and anxiety in comparison to their siblings, and 1.7 times more likely to act out on antisocial behaviour. The majority of researchers carried out their investigations through the use of questionnaires, a self-report technique, therefore easily affected by subjectivity.…

In order for the child to communicate intentionally with his or her caregivers, the child first needs to acquire certain skills. These skills can be classified into sensory, cognitive, and social abilities. If these skills do not develop first, the child will have little to no hope in developing effective communication. One of the pre requisites of intentional communication is the development of sensory abilities. These pertain to the five senses of smell, touch, taste, hearing, and smell.…

Following the 1979 Sandinista revolution, the newly installed Nicaraguan Government inaugurated the country's first large-scale effort to educate deaf children. The students were enrolled in two Managua schools and arrived with only a limited crude gestural signs, which had been developed within their families. As the children were brought together they begin to sign amongst themselves, therefore creating a new language. A decade later, Nicaraguan Sign Language, came from the creation of the children. Attempts to teach finger spelling were a failure because the children had no prior of words, let alone letters.…

Have you ever noticed how some children are way more “sensitive” or “hyperactive” then other children? Some people think children like that are just too emotional, might be ADHD, or anything else like that. All in all though that is not the case for those children. Yes, they are different than the others, but it is because they are just a highly sensitive child or an Indigo. In the book, Parenting the Highly Sensitive Child: a Guide for Parents & Caregivers of ADHD, Indigo, and Highly Sensitive Children by Julie B. Rosenshein, the author discusses multiple ways to tell if they child really is a highly sensitive child or if they are truly ADHD.…

Growing Up as a Rebel Every child goes through a point in their life where they want to rebel against their parents, usually in their teen years. The kid will go to parties, smoke, and try to fit in with others since they feel their parents aren’t as accepting. Any child will go through this whether rich or poor. In most cases, children rebel because they have strict parents, they never get much attention, they get less freedom with their parents being controlling, and they want to find out who they really are.…

How baby talk can help? As mentioned above, baby talk is characterized by slower and more repetitive tone than used in regular conversation and the speech is more likely in shorter, simpler utterances. Do infants pay greater attention to speech with such characteristics? The answer appears to be yes: They show a clear preference for it, from an early age, over adult-directed speech (e.g., Fernald 1985; Panneton Cooper & Aslin 1990; Werker, Pegg, & McLeod 1994; see also Zangl & Mills 2007).…
