This study breaks down college graduates in a 1 to 2 year period post college and categorizes them based on their satisfaction, mental health, achieved goals, and on their internal and external desires. Examining this study that was done could help us make an important change on the way we set goals in life and how we accomplish our goals. Results varied according to what the college graduate placed their importance on; for graduates that placed importance on intrinsic aspirations had better psychological health, while on the other hand extrinsic aspirations correlated more to ill-being. Kasser and Ryan listed several life goals that were examined highly in this study. These goals were; wealth, notoriety, body image, self development, close relationships, involvement with the community, and being fit. All of these goals are easily relatable in one way or another. People are affected everyday by one if not more of these goals that we want to achieve. The media plays the biggest factor on this, it always shows people that look very fit, wealthy, and have matured in life. This creates our own images or goals on what we want to achieve. As we analyze each individual in this study we find that the more intrinsic we get, the better our psychological health is. As we embettering our mental health, it decreases our risk of developing disorders such as: depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, and overall vitality. Relating to the study, it showed that people choosing either attainment style affected their psychological health. In the first batch of college graduates Kasser and Ryan found intrinsic attainment related positively to mental health. Also,putting early studies aside, extrinsic did not relate to mental health, but it can negatively affect you which can have positive sides to it as well.
