Personal Narrative: My Identity In Today's Society

A person’s identity is not just their body that exists in this world for others to see; it is also how a person views themselves and how they express themselves to other people. In today’s society, one’s identity can be challenged by different factors such as social media, stereotypes, and/or racism. These factors may challenge different people’s identities in negative or positive ways depending on how the individual interprets it. Identities are personal, but they may be influenced by outside factors to the extent that we start to see ourselves the way society views us. Social media is a major part of communication today. Because I am an international student whose house is in an area with a majority of Thai schools, I receive many despicable stares when I go on the BTS/MRT or am in a department store in my school uniform. I would be lying if I said that those looks around me did not make me feel insecure about myself. I seriously thought about changing my uniform every time before going out with family on Fridays, however, it struck me that I am proud to be a part of the TCIS family and I am very proud to be an international student. Being an international student is who I am; my family did not spend so much money to put me through an international school for me to feel ashamed of this fact. In the end, I did not allow those stares to make me feel embarrassed about my identity as an international student. I realized that I do not have to feel like I am less than what they are just because I am different from them. I did not let society change my identity or how I view myself; on the other hand, I changed those actions of discouragement to be proud of myself as encouragement for me to express my identity to the
