Manifest Destiny was an idea driven from the belief that America was chosen to become a greater and therefore much larger country. It was primarily an aggressive act, many factors contributed to the aggression such as expanding territories, the removal of pre-existing inhabitants, and extreme nationalism. The majority of these factors were very forceful and at the expense of other countries, with one exception. In the 1840s many believed that America was special and they supported the bettering as well as the enlarging of the country, no matter the cost. The United States was rapidly expanding, with just one purchase the size of the nation doubled, then the nation just kept adding territories. The Native Americans were the first to inhabit the land of America. In the 1830s the majority of the Native Americans were forcefully removed from their lands into a reserved unorganized territory. The Native Americans walked very long distances in horrible conditions towards present day Oklahoma. The Seminoles in Florida were the only tribe that had limited success resisting the move west, and even then they were forced to give up their land three years later. In the 1840s Great Britain and the United States both claimed Oregon and had agreed to share the land equally. For twenty years the joint occupation continued until Americans developed a growing interest in the territory. With out meaning to white Americans started an epidemic that killed the majority of Indians living in the region. They also greatly outnumbered the British living there, and residents of Oregon encouraged the United States to remove British presence entirely. Before the Mexican war, Americans were invited to living amongst Mexicans, until a few years later when they stopped welcoming settlers, which lead to the Mexican war. The original Americans wanted the land to only be under the rule of the United States, so they fought for Texas’s independence. Which was the idea of Manifest Destiny that called for and brought about the support of expansionism by many citizens. Whenever Americans had a growing interest in land, they sought after it in pursuit of gaining more land. Often times leading to violence and potential wars. Americans justified expansionism by the belief that it was pre-destined by God for it to happen, even when it was at a high cost for others. Because to them even history had declared that the United States would reach supremacy among other nations and countries. The United States began a war with Mexico over the possession of California, believing that it would be an easy victory for them. President Polk thought it would very simple and quick for Mexico to cede California territory to America, when it actually took two years. Americans also started disputes between lingering British settlers as well as Native Americans. The Manifest Density instilled in them more pride in their country and the desire to become the best more than ever before. The Manifest Destiny brought about lots of forceful change. It changed the way Americans viewed life as well as greatly impacted the amount of territory gained and taken over. The people supported and encouraged the United States government to start a war or purchase land because they believed it was their destiny to become even better.
