I am interning with a public accounting firm and I too have met people who majored in subjects that have nothing to do with accounting, such as biology, law and psychology. As you mentioned, as people grow and mature, their interests and perspectives tend to change as well. The things they were passionate about years ago may no longer appeal to them. Besides, choosing a career is a complex task which requires people to not only consider their interests but also the job market, its prospects and personal goals. I also agree with the fact that college is the place where students are exposed to different career options.

I agree with your statement about students not knowing their career goals when they enter college. In fact, the majority of college students change their majors, hence their career paths throughout their college career.
Although hard work, effort and passion are keys to a successful career, I think successful career requires more than those inputs. Accordingly, it is essential to factor in the nature of the industry an individual is interested in, the job prospects of the industry as well as the demand for the industry. When I was a high school senior and had to pick a major that would go with my interest as well as provide me with a job security, I had a difficult time choosing a career path. I have always been interested in art, but I know how competitive and challenging the industry is. Therefore, I decided to choose a major/field that I might enjoy, but most importantly a field that is demanded by the market. Even though I just finished my second year of college, I am still not sure if I have made the right decision. I hope this class will help you make a reasonable career choice. Good
