Regarding a few risk factors that influence a child’s behavior in a negative way are, first, when a child has a developmental delay such as from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Secondly, a child who is exposed to violence in the home, and thirdly, a child who lives in an unsafe community.
Concerning the first risk factor, developmental delay due to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), this refers to the consumption of too much alcohol by a mother during pregnancy, which causes some disabilities in young children. First, create a safe and low-stress classroom environment. Secondly, be a role model that shows and teaches respect, not only toward others but, respect for oneself. Third, help the child recognize his or her strengths and praise the child for their efforts. Another strategy is to enforce non-acceptance of violence in the classroom and reward non-violent behavior. The most important strategies a teacher can use, in this type of situation, is to stay calm, listen when the child needs to talk, reassure him or her that the violence in their home is not their fault, and be understanding of what the child has witnessed and what he or she is going
