Gene therapy is a growing medical technology specifically relating to the insertion of genes into human cells and tissue to treat diseases, mainly focusing on hereditary diseases in which mutant genes are replaced with ones of which are functional and healthy. Within gene therapy there are two other main occurring factors such as somatic gene therapy and germ-line gene therapy also taking into consideration the two techniques that follow gene therapy; gene augmentation therapy and gene inhibition therapy. Although gene therapy has many beneficial factors and is a rising promising treatment option for an uncountable number of diseases, the study is still hesitantly practised as numerous risks follow the procedure and further study is being conducted to ensure that it will be safe and effective. Gene therapy is only performed on patients suffering from diseases with no considered cures for example: Severe Combined Immune Deficiency (ADA-SCID), Chronic Granulomatous Disorder (CGD), Hemophilia.
