?I?m too fat?, ?I?m too short? ?I?m not smart enough? are all phrases we have heard from someone else at least once in our lives, if not from ourselves. It is known that teenager years are the time where we begin to feel self-conscious about ourselves and begin comparing ourselves to others. An adolescence year is in fact the most important stage for developing our self-esteem, and where self-esteem may begin declining. Studies show that one-third to one-half of teenagers struggle with self-esteem. Low-self esteem among teens is actually more common than high self-esteem. It is critical to be aware for society to be aware that the results of having low self-esteem and not learning how to cope with it can have long term affects that can carry on into adulthood. There are various factors that can contribute to a teenagers self-esteem. We will be looking at how socioeconomic status, parenting and the media can be a big influence to self-esteem.

First, socioeconomic status and life satisfaction is mediated by self- esteem. Chen (2016) found that socioeconomic status is significantly related to the life satisfaction of teenagers and those with lower socioeconomic status are at higher risk of powerlessness and lower self- esteem. Surprisingly, families with lower economic status receive more threatening and uncontrollable life events and higher stress.
