The environment can act as a trigger for certain conditions or diseases such as Diabetes, asthma, sickle cell crises etc. It can also act by causing a mutation in the genes of people which may be in the form of protection (the mutation in the red blood cells which act as a protection against malaria). The environment acts to affect the lifestyle choices of individuals (when people live in areas where there is a lot of junk food readily available, the probability of the members of the community being overweight increases. Mr. A, overweight and having a history of diabetes and high blood pressure lives in an area dominated by junk food and works in the food industry all his life. He has been advised to lose 50 pounds by his doctor to reduce his dependence on insulin and other medications.
Since Mr. A has worked all his life in the food industry the probability is high that he has spent a lot of time eating the food and understands how to prepare the food in a certain way. He needs to understand that to have an effective weight loss, he needs a perspective change, not a fad diet, but a change in lifestyle swapping healthy meals for the unhealthy ones. Incorporating more vegetables frozen may be an option.
Having worked in the food industry, he may need to be set up with a nutritionist to help him understand how to change his diet and also a trainer who can advise on how to exercise.
