The article that is being reviewed is The Fact of Ignorance: Revisiting the Socratic Method as a Tool for Teaching Critical Thinking from the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education 2014; 78 (7) Article 144 by Douglas R. Oyler, PharmD a,b and Frank Romanelli, PharmD, MPH and for the rest of this paper will be referred to as “the article”. In the article the authors discussed the value of critical thinking among health care professionals and re-visited the use of the Socratic method as a tool for modeling critical thinking due to increasing pressure from accrediting bodies and an evolving technical landscape, health care colleges and schools continue to place increasing emphasis on critical thinking skills rather than provision of facts and rote memorization. Numerous studies were done by the authors and found that understanding the “deep structure” to a problem is essential to critical thinking, the “deep structure” being the question within the question and not the question at face value. To provide a better understanding, an example has been adapted from the article: In a word problem using multiplication of rows and columns to count the number of vegetables in a garden, the deep structure relates to mathematics whereas the surface structure relates to farming, the latter of which is irrelevant to the problem’s solution.

My life goal is to run my own business in the future. When I imitatively formed a team in school; when I sparked the creative idea of selling Korean hot pot at the party; when I successfully persuade my sponsors to support our conference with free food; when I designed and uploaded my own advertisements online, and saw they were favored again and again; when my limited discount coupons were sold out during the pre-sale – I realized that my blueprint was actually coming true step-by-step and I felt excited about the unknown challenges. However, I’m also well aware that prospective business activities are not as easy as those practices I’ve experienced. Except for business sense and knowledge, critical thinking, which is exactly what I’m trying to improve, plays an important role in the real business world. Mount Holyoke College (MHC) is the place where I can discover what I am truly seeking for.…

In a professional environment, possessing this skill would demonstrate not only competency, but leadership. In a meeting, one may be asked what one thinks of the ideas that have been discussed and it would serve one well to be able to analytically and intellectually reflect on what has been discussed and arrive at an answer to a problem that one’s peers would comprehend. Possessing the skill of thinking critically is crucial in all parts of life; it is a skill that will be easily noticed and assist one in answering any question that…

During your normal daily life or even in the operating room, critical thinking can be very advantageous for you and the people around you. The ability to think critically can also diffuse many situations that may lead to pain and frustrations (Elder & Paul, n.d.). When you encounter a difficult situation, you should ask yourself questions to find out how to become more successful in the situation. In the operating room, there are many situations in which you have to evaluate whether or not you should speak up about a situation, and this is where critical thinking comes into play because you really need to know the whole situation and see where the other team members mindsets are. Many times people just jump into conclusion and this will cause conflict to occur, most people regret these situations and this is because they weren’t thinking clearly enough, since people don’t take time to think things through (Elder & Paul, n.d.).…

Critical thinking could provide a safer and more productive future for the upcoming adults. State education departments require so much essential material to be taught in such little time that critical thinking can’t be incorporated into the classes. In the following statement, Frank Breslin says, “In order to cover the curriculum, courses must be taught quickly, superficially, and uncritically, the infallible way of boring students. This is a great source of frustration to teachers, who would rather teach their courses in depth in order to give students an informed understanding of the issues involved”(Why Public Schools Don't Teach Critical Thinking-Part 1, Frank Breslin). This statement alone proves that there needs to be a change in the school system.…

Having the ability to use critical thinking in the workplace is just as important as knowing how to use the ability before even having the job. For blue collar workers such as moving men this ability is frequently used. Rose exemplifies this in “Blue Collar Brilliance” by stating, “movers determine how to get an electric range down a flight of stairs require coordination, navigation, planning, and the establishing incremental goals” (252). Just as liberal arts students use critical thinking skills for their education and to prepare for their future careers, after reading this quote one can see that the average blue-collar worker, such as a mover, have learned and use the ability of critical…
