The mental health literacy of health workers practicing in acute settings has been highlighted in literate as insufficient (Marynowski-Traczyk & Broadbent, 2011). An Australian study has shown newly resisted nurses lack the skills and knowledge to manage mental health issues when caring for a patient with high acuity physical conditions (McCann, Lu & Berryman, 2009). Furthermore, a qualitative study documented that more experienced nurses working in the ED feel that although they have adequate mental health literacy they are not given enough time or support to treat patients adequately who are experiencing mental health issues (Marynowski-Traczyk & Broadbent, 2011). Moreover, in analysing the various influencing factors that contribute to the decision making process, it is clear that having a systematic tool greatly assist a novice nurse in safely caring for patients. The Gibbs reflective tool enabled the author to analyze the experiences further and highlighted was done well and areas that needed improvement. This in turn assisted the author to develop the recommendations of promoting mental health literacy in acute settings and training registered nurses in facilitating students.
