Question 1- The Role of a Forensic Anthropologist
a) In general, the role of a forensic anthropologist is to examine human remains. In this particular case, the role of the forensic anthropologist was to excavate, examine and identify an unknown body that was discovered near a prohibited burial site at a cemetery in British Colombia (Rogers 2017). Dr. Rogers, who was the forensic anthropologist for the case was successful in her role of excavating, identifying and examining the unknown skeletal remains (Rogers 2017).

Rogers (2017) assumed that she was going to find fragmented bones in the cemetery, she was misled and brought to the back to the maintenance area, near a backhoe. Dr. Rogers (2017) then discovered that the skeletal remains were in a hole, approximately 2.5m down. After finding a piece of tissue that contained a part of the eye socket and a piece of the jaw; she identified the skeletal remains to be human, and the victim to be old because no teeth were found with the jaw, indicating an elderly person (Rogers 2017). In fact, the findings were unusual, when Dr. Rogers (2017) finally came in contact with the remains she discovered a zipper on top of the coffin-like object that was on top of the remains. The zipper bag was identified as a body bag, with some of the skeletal remains and the toe-tag inside (Rogers 2017). These findings were considered unusual because the remains had the autopsy scar, this indicated that the body followed normal autopsy procedure, therefore, the question became, how did the body get there (Rogers 2017)? After the follow-up Police investigation, the question was answered, the victim was an elder who lived in a retirement home (Rogers 2017). According to Dr. Rogers (2017) when an individual passes away in a retirement home the body receives an autopsy, this explains the autopsy scar. The individual was buried in the prohibited area because proper notifications were not met, the morgue forgot to inform the family of the body, therefore, it was placed in the fridge for approximately 2 years (Rogers 2017). An Individual at the morgue thought he was going to get in trouble for the improper procedure of informing the family (Rogers 2017). Therefore, he asked the cemetery to make a hole for the victim, like that he would avoid getting in trouble. For these reasons, the findings in the case were considered
