Facial Nerve Dissection

Decent Essays
Purpose:
Facial nerve exploration during parotiectomy can be achieved using two basic approaches antegrade and retrograde. The aim of this meta-analysis was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the incidence rate of facial nerve palsy between retrograde and antegrade facial nerve dissection after parotid surgery against the alternative hypothesis of a difference.
Methods:
From inception to August 2016, an electronic search of major databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane CENTRAL) for all clinical human studies, either randomized controlled trial or not, comparing antegrade vs retrograde facial nerve dissection during parotid surgery. The outcome Postoperative facial nerve weakness either transient or permanent was analyzed.

The pitching is getting faster, bat speeds are getting quicker, and bats are created with newer and better technology; these three things are resulting in softballs popping off bats at higher velocities, yet no required protective measures are being taken to protect the pitcher from the ball. Getting hit by a ball traveling at high speeds can have devastating effects on a pitcher if no safety measures are taken to soften the blow of the ball. A hit to the body or face of a pitcher cannot be prevented, but the injuries can be reduced to minimal. A face mask can save a pitcher not only from facial injuries, but it weakens the impact of the ball and can save her life. The distance from home plate to the mound in softball is 43 feet, but…

Sialodenitis (Parotitis) Parotitis, or sialadenitis, is an inflammatory reaction of the parotid gland caused by bacterial, viral, fungal, or mycobacterial penetration. The infection originates with retrograde migration of oral cavity flora through Stensen’s duct. Stasis of saliva, ductal obstruction, decreased stimulation of saliva (anorexia), decreased mastication, and poor oral hygiene contribute to retrograde migration. Chronic illnesses, recent surgical procedures, hypovolemia (diarrhea, emesis, hemorrhage), an immunocompromised host, and radiotherapy are contributing factors (Buttaro, Trybulski, Bailey, & Sandberg-Cook, 2011). Blocked saliva flow results from poor oral hygiene, mucus plug in a salivary duct, salivary stone in the parotid…
