Facial Hair Discrimination

Decent Essays
It is understandable that having facial hair or long nails while working in food service poses sanitation issues. But what about those instances where someone wants to work for a smaller company like retail or a flower shop? Why does it matter that someone has blue hair? Where did the notion ever come from that it was unprofessional? Did this start as discrimination? One person did not like the way a person looked so they did not hire them for the job? Is it unprofessional to have a sense of personality? It does not go unnoticed that employers force employees to change their look because the supervisor do not like it, and it is not legal in the workforce. Everyone wants everyone else to be a certain way but, our country is stronger because

Discrimination has always been a part of America’s history. Throughout time, an individual’s status in society was based on race and gender. The influence of this mindset left women and minorities feeling degraded when seeking employment and traces of this effect can still be seen in the working world today. Presently women and minorities still encounter prejudice employers.…

Her use of such stories endears the person to the audience because it is something they can identify with. She also offers expert opinions to solidify the claims. However, for her argument to be believable and complete, her use of research needs to also include the opposing parties’ point of view. It seems the employers in particular, are not portrayed in any positive light with any of the anecdotes mentioned. For example, she points out the injustice against the obese woman that was rejected for a job as mentioned in paragraph 3.…

In his 1977 essay, “In Defense of Masks”, Kenneth Gergen introduces the concept of multiple personas and personalities as being ‘masks’. In his psychological and sociological research, Gergen concludes that people do not have a coherent sense of identity and need masks to be happy, healthy, and successful in society. I agree with Gergen because different situations call for different personalities; such as acting professional for a job interview, being lively with friends, or maintaining a perfect image of yourself for other. Most jobs call for a certain degree of professionalism. People put on masks while at work to give off an impression of uniformity.…

One article that we had read during class that I believe personally that is very important is “Dressing for the job” by Ann Marie Sabath. In this article, Ann Marie Sabath talks about the unwritten “rules” in the workforce. In college, students are taught the rules of the classroom or the rules of the campus while in the workforce these rules are not stated straightforwardly. A rule in the workforce that would be as Ann Marie Sabath calls “unwritten” would be dress code. Going into a job you have to make sure that the clothing you wear everyday is appropriate.…

I do not think it is okay to use profiling standards to prevent future unwanted behavior. For example, it is as if a black guy walks in, for instance, should you anticipate the guy to steal or if you see a Muslim, should you be on guard for a terrorist attack. Someone’s look should not determine whether they are a criminal or someone of interest. We should not have any kind of profile standard to prevent unwanted attention. We should not have to judge someone based on looks.…

Everybody gets discriminated at least once in their lifetime. They get discriminated based on their race, ethnicity, appearance, and other reasons. Sometimes, they don’t know the reason why they get discriminated, but people shouldn’t get discriminated at all. People feel like they get discriminated by their appearance. For example, when I was in nursing school in Virginia, I felt like I was discriminated just because the way I look or just being different or maybe because I was Asian, but I don’t know the exact reason why nobody wanted to talk to me.…

Should schools be allowed to ban makeup? High school in Australia begins at the average age of 13 where your begin year 7 and ends at the age of 18 in year 12. My high school was split into two campuses – years 7 to 9 and one and years 10 to 12 at the other. The first campus, 7 to 9, was a lot harsher about the uniform policy, skirt 10 cm above the knee, tie and top button done up, the usual stuff, and of course for the girls in particular, no makeup. This coursed some rebellious young women, like myself, to get into trouble quite a few times for breaking this useless rule.…

American society accepting something simple such as a hair texture has allowed me to feel welcomed in American society. Society has previously created a demeaning relationship between ethnic hair and professionalism. For instance, natural hair is labeled and unprofessional, while white, straight hair is known as professional. As a woman of color, working two jobs (both high positioned on campus) I was not discriminated because of the texture of my hair. Professionalism is being an expert at a specific skill and my hair should not affect my abilities to do my job in a workplace.…

Men are called more attractive for being taller while women are for having an hourglass figure, these responses are consistent even across race. I do not believe that the author assumed readers were aware of the problem: nonetheless that is why she explained every type of discrimination there is and how often it goes on. The problems she discussed in the article have been around even before the nineteenth century, however many people are still oblivious to the fact that discrimination still exists among our society. The author assumes that we knew that bias based appearance has remained in all but one state, six cities, and countries. Looks of the last bastion are acceptable bigotry because people across the country are intolerant to others who differ from them.…
