Faces at the Bottom of the Well- Derrick Bell
This book is about the pervasiveness of racism and long-lasting effects after slavery in legal, political, and social life in the United States. Derrick Bell used his on experiences as a black man to write about the circumstances in America. He did this by sharing his views using his knowledge of law and politics he studied at Harvard law school. Throughout the book, he strongly supported the notion that racism will forever be an issue because of how this country was built upon it.“I truly believe that analysis of legal developments through fiction, personal experience, and the stories of people on the bottom illustrates how race and racism continue to dominate our society”(Bell). For the longest I felt like racism was not a big issue and that leaders like Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks and other Civil Right activist and different social and political changes made this issue irrelevant to our society today. After reading this book I understand the different circumstances African Americans face every day. I feel like history repeats itself, I feel like black people still have to face the same situations today but in a different way. Social media is our generation's way of exposing racism. I deal with it on a constant basis and still feel like we are living the separate but equal life because of the circumstances we face. Even though segregation is not a law it is still practiced by those who support the ideal of white superiority. I attended a predominately white school where racism is still exist and have witnessed things that my grandparents have experienced. I agree with Bell’s views on America and the message gives me the perception that this issue in America is uncompromising and
