Week 1
Within the first week the two keys to a speedy recovery are rest and elevation. Resting does not need to be taken to the extreme, in fact, we encourage our patients to remain upright and walking around. This allows the natural forces of gravity to aid in drainage of any swelling. Although we recommend having a loved one stay in close proximity the first day of your recovery, by the second day you should be independent.
It is normal to want to avoid going out in public the first 3 to 5 days; however, walking around the house often is suggested. A critical part of the drainage process occurs at night. Most people do not sleep on their back and may find it difficult to do so at a 45 degree angle. For example, avoid any type of straining, such as bending over or lifting up heavy objects. Washing might be challenging. Your surgeon may give you the go-ahead to shower or bathe, but you'll want to be careful about the amount of water that hits your face and the strength of the water pressure. Avoid scrubbing the newly sticthed area or hyperextending your neck while you wash your hair. Once your face is washed each day, you will apply a polysportin ointment to the stiches which will decrease the potential for scarring and encourage expedited
