Previously for our sociology class, we completed a discussion post about social media and our views on it in society. Society is steadily on the rise and contributes to majority of our day to day lives in some way. The great debate is if social media is for the better or for the worse. To add to that debate, we did interviews analyzing how people of various age groups view social media and how it impacts their lives. The objective is to cross examine social media through a series of specific questions ranging from the phone type they have to whether they blog or not. I interviewed four women, all of African American descent except for one who is Pilipino. All of them are on a full time, non-restricting income. Their ages are eighteen, twenty …show more content…
Social media overall has a high impact on the four out of five interviewees. The impact definitely differed among the age groups and certainly certain variables. The ones the most impacted where myself, the eighteen year old and the thirty six year old. I was somewhat shocked by the thirty six year old but I realized she was a single women without children so she uses social media to find dates and companionships. The forty six year old had the least impact overall. I think she has the least because she has gone majority of her life without social media so she has learned to fixate herself into other forms of entertainment and leisure. The creation and use of social media has, for better or worse, become one of the defining characteristics of Generation-Z, or the Millennials. According to Pew Research, roughly 90% of young adults between the ages of 18-29 use social media. According to Link Humans, the average number of accounts run by an individual user is five (Link Humans). Those are significant numbers, and those numbers correlate to a larger shift in the way we communicate with each other and in the way we participate and create our culture and our entertainment. Users are now far more capable to participate in the creation and production of things than they used to be.…

Please note, if you want to extend the idea from this article and focus the age impacts on a specific group (PIO with age over 50), please mention your intention in your topic and revise your hypothesis (e.g., A PIO with age over 50 would be less likely to use social media than a younger PIO). Even though I think in a master level your research design is good enough, to include the ideas from all of the references you read and make this study much better complete, I encourage you to develop some more sub-hypotheses and one additional research question: The reason to create an additional research question is to collect data helping forward researches examine this issue deeply. You don’t need to formulate any new hypothesis. Instead, you just need to describe the possibilities (I will state that later below).…

As Standage reassures the reader: “their merits outweigh their drawbacks” (Standage). Both younger and older generations have different reasons for using social media platforms and the simplicity of how they work will only allow for more people to begin using these platforms (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) in the years to come. The biggest problem that will still be around is the fact that the users of social media platforms will keep the egotistic idea that the medium revolves around them when it really doesn’t after being re-evaluated. Social mediums will always be around whether it be for spreading knowledge or just simply wasting time instead of doing something more productive but the fact of the matter is that from both Ham and Standage’s articles, social mediums are only what people make them out to be from how they use Facebook or Twitter.…
