Without actually looking, speaking, and making eye contact with one another it is difficult to really get to know someone. In fact, “Kids who spend more time engaging with a screen than with other kids or adults can struggle to understand emotion, create strong relationships or become more dependent on others” (Johnson). This means that without actually interacting face to face, it can be difficult to really understand what someone is saying. Communication by means of texting or even a phone call don’t allow for an in depth understanding of what the person is actually communicating. According to Susan Tardanico, “Studies show that only 7% of communication is based on the written or verbal word. A whopping 93% is based on nonverbal body language.” With this stated, someone could be saying one thing in a text message or a social media post, but they actually mean something completely different. Tardanico also stated in her article that a mother, Susan Seline, and her daughter were texting back and forth. The daughter told her mother that she was having a great time in college and that everything was going well. The daughter seemed very happy, but later that night she attempted suicide. This goes to show that it can be difficult to get a full understanding for what someone is feeling without face to face
