Facebook Right To Be Forgotten

The discussions in this section will first consider the reasons why Facebook should not establish a right to be forgotten for its community if users and then for reasons why they should. Then at the end the selected decision will be mentioned.

The right to be forgotten involves right to the erasure of information in the possession of other parties, in this case Facebook and its associated companies like WhatsApp, Instagram, etc. Facebook had rapid growth in the recent years, as more and more users started using it as an interface to the internet. Facebook can solve the challenge to get time and attention into a bigger share of consumer wallets, i.e. a bigger share of money they spend either directly or indirectly through the advertising revenue. This will in turn benefit shareholders and achieve profit maximization. Establishing the right to be forgotten is actually against freedom of speech and a free flow of information and it conflicts with the open nature of the web and the free flow of information. This is in fact depriving the public of useful information. Implementing the right to be forgotten will incur some cost for Facebook as it needs to change their software code to satisfy the right. Implementing and enforcing the right to be forgotten involves some overhead as hiding information from the past will be difficult. The imposition of rights will help Facebook to have a process in place for reviewing and following through on take-down requests. Establishing the law allow users to have the right to have their information deleted after a certain time, the right to have a "clean slate," and the right to be connected only to present information. This capability will be warmly welcomed by users and they will see Facebook as a morally responsible company (ethical and socially responsible). This will result in awards by users in terms of a positive reputation and increased interest in the usage of Facebook hoping that users can have the information removed when needed.
