Facebook’s default settings in its new features createsd a lot of issues as it related to behavioral profiling, privacy policy settings or targeted ads, timeline sharing, or video of your years with Facebook, etc. For a new featured added, Facebook should not enable automatic sign-up that changes user`s privacy settings without their permission. Apart from data retention policies, the private settings that enables or disables the sharing of users personal data without the knowledge of users should strictly be avoided. When updating and publishing new privacy features, Facebook should disclose all the related information in the order that may be of interest to users. As per EPIC, the default setting should not violate user expectations, diminish user privacy, and contradict Facebook’s own representations. Facebook should give users a meaningful control over personal information, and seek appropriate injunctive and compensatory relief if user’s private data is compromised. Also, the default setting should not make user to go and check that if the information shared is public or not. The privacy setting must be a global setting with capabilities to override only if user wants to. The user should be given control to share or not their information, in only groups they like to and users must be able to block people from accessing their information. One suggestion is to have a default setting of friends instead of public for the information sharing related freatures in Facebook, and users must be given a privacy checkup tool to check and see all privacy settings at a glance. If the default setting is not handled properly, users feel more disempowered as they are unaware about how exactly their data is used for advertising or other purposes. These changes are relevant in the wake of increased competition from Snapchat and others where inormtion can be deleted as needed.
