The Impact of Facebook on Students Social networking sites, especially Facebook, have become increasingly popular in today’s society, but in students, the trend seems to taking a turn for the worst. Facebook has been able to reach a large group of audiences from middle school students to grandmas and grandpas in only few years. It made communications across the world easier and it was both entertaining and informative. It contained informative content covering every possible global, national or local news and at the same time, entertained its users with videos, pictures and memes. Spending hours and hours on Facebook scrolling through the news feed can tremendously affect students’ academic performances and therefore, affect his/her future. A study done by Netherland’s psychologist Paul A. Kirschnera showed that there was significant difference in Grade Point Average among the students who used Facebook and those who didn’t. Typically, a Facebook user had a GPA of 3.06, while “non-users” had an average of 3.82. But there is also another side to this concept. With some students, Facebook can actually also increase their general knowledge. Since Facebook, nowadays, is used for things more than sharing pictures, it has the capability of increasing students’ knowledge. While scrolling through their newsfeed, students can branch out to other articles or news that people shared and learn about current happenings in the world. This is especially helpful to students who don’t have time to sit through a news broadcast or read an entire newspaper. The student gets an idea of what is going on in the current world through the readings that they do through Facebook. Although there are many negative impacts that Facebook have on students, there are also some positive aspects once in a while. It mostly depends on how the student utilizes his/her time on Facebook. Time management and positive attitude can help student decrease the negative effect of Facebook. Making right choices can help the student get positive outcomes from the use of Facebook and avoid mistakes that could have long-term
