People who want to keep in touch with friends and family commonly use Social Networking sites. The most popular of these sites include, Classmates, MySpace, Friendster, Live Journal, Twitter and the most common, Facebook. Facebook allows users to connect to others by sharing pictures, blogs, videos, interests and more and has taken over American teens and even adults. There have been sites long before Facebook was created but this fairly new site has become the most popular today by far. Since 2004 this site has gained over 175 million active users and is still growing. Although these sites claim they have made efforts to protect against such happenings, there is still know way of knowing for sure if measures are being taken to keep people safe. Even though Facebook allows friends and family to connect through the internet, the internet is not the safest place to do this. Sites that have a huge saturation of adolescents are often attractive to online predators. Whether predators are looking for inappropriate pictures, conversations, or to actually meet in person, they are out there waiting for someone to respond to them. In Sexton’s article she states, “All of the parental warnings and guidance in the world can’t change the fact that teens lack the experience and judgment needed to negotiate the internet safely when approached by a ‘friend’”(Sexton). When young people are online talking to other teens just like them they are more likely to be open with them than with adults. More often than frequently teens are deceived by predators and persuaded into a one on one meeting which can prove to be tragic. One last point is that even though these sites provide an access to the internet and can be fun for teens, the more time they spend on the internet is more time spent away from their family. As the years go on the social patterns are changing and not in the best ways. Socializing is based more on the internet and not in face-to-face relationships.
