Dark Side Of Social Media

"At Facebook, we build tools to help people connect with the people they want and share what they want, and by doing this we are extending people 's capacity to build and maintain relationships...” (Zuckerberg, 2012). This sentence was used as the introduction of the letter written by Mark Zuckerberg, to the US market outlining the goals Facebook wishes to achieve. Zuckerberg reasons that there is a “huge need and huge opportunity to get everyone in the world connected” (Zuckerberg, 2012). He allures to the idea of Facebook being the go to method of how everyone should connect since it was designed for people “to stay connected with friends and family, to discover what’s going on in the world, and to share and express what matters to them” (Zuckerberg, 2012). However, society today has chosen to live on the dark side of social media. The time between clicking “send” or “update” and arranging thoughts and words together have been reduced to seconds. The introduction of social media has blocked individuals from seeing faces when words or phrases are thrown out. Issues happening around the world only see a few hours of attention similar to the mentality of surrounding people who replace human interaction with text messaging. Screens of are now lighting up faces and darkening the hearts of users. Never before has society ever had multiple methods of connections worldwide while still becoming disconnected from what was significant before the internet and social media took over.
