When users log in, doing so gives the hackers the user name and password and they use those to access the users other accounts, because many people recycle their passwords (Fodeman Marje 3). Hackers also post links on people’s profiles that appear to be real, advertising items, and when clicked on users are taken to fake pages (Fodeman Marje 4). Not realizing it is a sham, the users are coaxed into making purchases that just possibly lead to credit card fraud. This leads to identity and credit card theft, damaging one’s reputation, and many other problems. Children are creating Facebook and Twitter accounts without realizing what they are doing or the risks that follow. Kids do not realize the dangers of posting information like their full names, birth dates, and schools they attend. According to Maria Giffen, “…i-safe discovered that 73 percent of high school students reveal their real first names online, 30 percent identify their schools, and 53 percent post their own photos” (2). A predator can locate a person through pieces of information, not even having the precise information, by using sites like Google (Giffen 4). According to Fodeman and Marje in 2009, fourth graders were starting to use Facebook and sixty to seventy percent of seventh graders have accounts as well; if that was two years ago, then imagine the rates now (2). Children are also gullible, adding anyone who sends them a request, and then developing friendships with them. They are unaware some of these people could be predators who are stalking
