1. If I had the option to choose, I would prefer a free open source software eHealth system. First and foremost, Dr. Borland states in lecture that a FOSS eHealth system, “may force governments such as the province of Ontario, to abandon the specialized proprietary software systems” (Borland, 2017). Abandoning the proprietary system that the Harper government created would decrease the amount that we, as Ontarians, are paying in taxes. Our taxdollars would no longer be needed to pay for the creation of the specialized proprietary system. In addition, on May 27, 2013, the World Health Organization recognized, “that the lack of a seamless exchange of data within and between health information systems hinders care and leads to fragmentation of health information systems, and that improvement in this is essential to realize that full potential of information and communication technologies in health system stregthening” (p. 1). …show more content…
In my opinion, allowing eHealth technology to be accessible to anyone who is registered and has access through a computer, can be extremely beneficial. For example, if a Canadian citizen was to go on vacation outside of Canada and fell ill on their trip, through the FOSS eHealth system, a doctor in a foreign country could access and make additions to that individuals file based on the treatment they received. Then, when that citizen returned to Canada, their family physician would be able to view the treatment administered by the foreign doctor and proceed from there.
